Betty Ann Burke passed away peacefully on Monday September 10th 2012, with her loving family by her side. Born in Brooklyn NY, she was a lifelong resident of Bordentown. Betty Ann attended and graduated from the Bordentown school system. She was employed with The Division of Motor Vehicle as the Assistant Chief of Personnel; she retired in 1991 after 37 years of dedicated service.
During her lifetime, Betty Ann had so selflessly given so much of herself to Bordentown. She was a proud parishioner of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and a member of the Bordentown Historical Society, the Bordentown Garden club, the Bordentown Downtown Association. She will be best remembered for being a vital member of the Bordentown Veterans’ Memorial Committee.
While on this committee she spent many hours researching and certifying names to be inscribed on the Memorial Wall and for them to be carved into the stone panel, she also took on the onerous task of coordinating the engraving and installation of all the commemorative pavers, she developed a grid chart for the location of each paver which assisted families and loved ones in locating their paver. For fourteen (14) years, Betty Ann worked on the project until its completion.
She will be greatly missed by many.
She was the daughter of the late Edward R. and Elizabeth V. Burke; she is predeceased by her brother, Dr. Edward R. Burke Jr., and her sister-in-law, Peggy Burke.
She is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Sheila and Donald Giberson, Anita and Leonard Ricasoli, Maida L. Burke, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday September 14th 11am at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church 45 Crosswicks St. Bordentown with Rev. Michael J. Burns Officiating. Calling hours will be held on Friday morning from 9:00 to 10:30am at the funeral home. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery Bordentown. Victor Smarro, 59, passed away peacefully on Saturday September 15th 2012 at his home with his loving family by his side. Born in Jersey City, he was a long time resident of Sayreville before moving to Robbinsville in 2001. He was employed as a Senior Supervisor for Gold Coast Freightways located in Avenel for the past 25 years. An avid Yankees and Giants fan, he had a talent for landscaping. Victor’s greatest joy in life was being a “family man”, he was a self-sacrificing person who would always be the first to “lend a hand” and never ask for anything in return. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, son and will be missed by many.
Son of the late Victor E. Smarro, he is survived by his loving wife, Jean E. Smarro, his sons and daughters-in-law, Victor Jr. and Shawna Smarro, Matthew J. Smarro, John J. and Deanna Smarro, his grandchildren, Christian Patrick and Alexa Grace Smarro, his mother, Frances Smarro, his brother, Michael Smarro, his Aunts Mae Cammerano, Barbara Colarusso, his Uncle, Herbie Smarro and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Cecilia Moran
Cecilia A. Moran passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 3, 2012 at the Arden Courts of Yardley with her loving family by her side. Born in Edinburg Scotland, she moved the U.S. in 1956 residing in Trenton; where she met the love of her life Daniel J. Moran at the Catholic Young Adult Club (CYAC). They were married in 1958 and she resided in Bordentown until her passing. Cecilia was employed as a secretary for The Divine Word Missionaries located in Bordentown from 1966 to 1976. In 1976 she became the Supervisor of Secretarial Services for the Office of Legislative Services located in Trenton. She retired in 1993 after 16 years of dedicated service.
As a faithful parishioner of St. Mary’s Church, she was instrumental in starting the food pantry. But her greatest joy in life was being with her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, caring friend and will be missed greatly.
She was the daughter of the late James and Cecilia Flynn, she is predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years, Daniel J. Moran and her best friend, Maryann Alfano. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel Moran and Mary Dunn, Kevin and Kerry Moran, her grandchildren, Sean, Caitlin, Erin, Darren and Patrick Moran, Colleen and husband David Heath, Sarah and husband Rick Austin, Elizabeth and Mary Leszczuk, her great-grandson, Grayson Moran, her sisters, Kathleen Chuda, Mary Allan and brother Charles Flynn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Monday October 8th 11:00 am at the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 45 Crosswicks St. Bordentown NJ 08505. Bordentown – Ruth Bontique Boaz Benyon passed away on Tuesday, October 9th, at home with her loving children at her side.
Born in Trenton, Ruth resided in Hamilton and graduated with the Hamilton High Class of 1951. She later earned her Associates of Liberal Arts Degree at Burlington County College. In 1954 she married in Tokyo, Japan and then lived in NJ, VA, MD, and HI, settling in Bordentown in 1968 where she raised her four children. Ruth worked for the US Government Departments of USAF, ARMY, SSA, and USDA, retiring in 1986. After retirement Ruth worked as a local substitute teacher.
She enjoyed family and friends, Bordentown Township Senior Club and crochet group activities, puzzle solving, flower arranging, baking, and vegetable carving. Her crocheting and baking won many ribbons/awards at NJ State Fairs. Recently Ruth was an armchair sports and avid Phillies fan; but, in younger years, she loved to participate in many sports, along with being a BSA Den Mother, Assistant Girl Scout Leader, and Sunday School Teacher. She loved to dance, ice skate and roller skate, and attended many different Bible schools each summer. She enjoyed the Jersey shore, swimming in the ocean, trips with the church youth group to see plays at the Music Circus Theater in Lambertville and hayrides. In addition, she loved traveling, especially cruises; trips to Disney World, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Nassau, Bahamas, 8 other Caribbean Islands and South America, and bus trips through the US and Canada.
Daughter of the late Clifford F. Boaz and Florence L. Berry, she is survived by her children, Susan R. Benyon, Lawrence R. Benyon, Judith A. Benyon (Samuel) Sager, and Robert C. Benyon; grandchildren, Miranda Benyon, Heather Benyon (Dan) Walsh, Gregory, Mitchell, Eric, and Catherine Benyon, Stephanie, Paul, and Mathew Sager; great grandchildren, Daniel and Conor Walsh, and Christopher Borges; and several sisters and brothers.
Calling hours will be held on Friday October 12th from 10-11 am at the Bordentown Home for Funerals, 40 Crosswicks St. Bordentown with services for Ruth following at the funeral home. Born and raised on Tilghman Island on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, she moved to Bordentown when she married Joseph Harold Kelly who predeceased her in 2003. Mary Ellen enjoyed gardening, reading historical novels and the company of her cherished cats. Daughter of the late James D. and Mary E. Harrison, she is predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph H. Kelly. Sophie Patricia Martiak, 94, passed away peacefully at her home on November 5, 2012 with her loving family by her side. Born in Perth Amboy, she lived in Fords before moving to Edison 32 years ago. Sophie and her husband Stephen, a 50 year member of the IBEW Local 456, owned and operated Martiak Confectionery Store for 15 years in Fords. She retired from Prudential Insurance Company in Iselin 14 years ago where she worked in their Food Service Division. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Stephen of 63 years, son Peter and brothers Stanley and Henry Myslinsky. She is survived by two daughters, Maureen Pecht of Edison and Lorraine O’Prandy of Fords; two sons, Stephen Martiak Jr. of Marlboro and Wayne Martiak of Point Pleasant; a sister Irene of Landisville Pennsylvania, brother Edward of Barnegat; 23 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Dateline Bordentown: Helen (Mercantini) Lynch Campbell passed away peacefully on Nov. 26th 2012 at Robert Wood University Hospital with her loving family by her side. Born in Bordentown, Helen was the daughter of the late Julia (Climati) and John Mercantini. She was the wife of the late James E. Lynch, Sr. and the present wife of Charles Campbell. Mrs. Lynch Campbell graduated from Cathedral High School in Trenton, NJ and went into the family Chevrolet business, Mercantini Motors, which was started by her father and uncle. When the business was sold, Helen continued working for the new owner, Bob McGuire, for a total of 48 years of service to Chevrolet. Upon retiring, she received high accolades from the company CEO for all of her years of dedication. Helen was a member of St. Mary’s Altar Rosary Society as well as vice president of Mercantini Motor Company during its many years of existence. She was also a special friend to the Poor Clare nuns over the years. In addition to her husband, Helen is survived by two daughters, Annemarie Patten and her husband Stephen of Beverly, MA; Helen DiLemme and her husband Anthony; and Mayor James E. Lynch, Jr. and his wife Judith all of Bordentown. She also leaves five grandchildren, Troy, Anthony, and Steven DiLemme; Christopher Colpoys, and Siobhan Lynch as well as four great-grandchildren, Alexis and Edward Colpoys and Madeline and Liam DiLemme. Helen also leaves many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Louise Iannotti and two brothers, Louis and Alphonse Mercantini. Born in Trenton, he was a lifelong member of the Bordentown Community. Jim was employed with The Burlington County Bridge Commission, retiring in 2006 after over 30 years of dedicated service. Throughout his life, Jim was a part of public service; as a Bordentown City Commissioner, he served as Director of Public Safety and Director of Finance & Revenue for eight years. He also served as a Legislative Aide for former Assemblyman Joseph R. Malone for many years. A proud parishioner of St. Mary’s Church, he was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Bordentown Elks Lodge 2085 and a member of The Knights Of Columbus Council 570 Bordentown. He was an avid golfer, local antique dealer, and was a serious Notre Dame fan. He will be remembered for his honesty, selflessness and willingness to help others. The son of the late Joseph and Kathryn Kelly, he is predeceased by his brothers Richard and Joseph Kelly, he is survived by his beloved wife Susan A. Kelly, his daughter, Cindy G. Lynch, his grandsons, Thomas Patrick Lynch, Jr. and Ryan James Lynch, his brother and sister-in-law, Michael Robert and Patricia Kelly, his close friend Wayne Irons and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ron P. Platas, 57, passed away comfortably in his home on Saturday, December 22nd, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in the Bronx, Ron grew up in Hamilton before eventually moving to Bordentown. An avid athlete, he played a variety of sports throughout his life from childhood through high school. As an adult, he had many fond memories of playing in flag football and men’s’ softball leagues in Hamilton. In his later years, Ron became an avid golfer. He would play every opportunity with his family and friends, and travel down to Myrtle Beach every spring for a week-long golf outing. Ron’s one true passion in his life was his family. From the brightest of moments, to the darkest of times, Ron was a consoler, a comedian, and a trusted advisor. He had an all-encompassing love that was felt by anyone who was lucky enough to know him, and especially by those that had the privilege to call him family. Ron was the son of the late Jean Platas. He is survived by his loving wife Terri, daughters Samantha and Sara, grandson Samuel; father Ernest; brothers Larry, Ernie, Rick, and Dave; and many devoted nieces and nephews. Dateline Oregon Mary Alice George passed away peacefully on January 20th 2013 at her home in Medford, Oregon, with her loving and devoted son Gregory by her side. Born in Miami and raised in Tampa Florida, she moved to N.J. in 1952. She became a member of the First Presbyterian church of Bordentown and helped supervise “The annual Oyster Suppers” from 1955 through the late 1980’s. She then became a Church Elder. In her earlier years, Mary was always very active in her community; she was involved in the Brownies, Girl Scouts, PTA, Bordentown Township Democratic Election Committee and The Bordentown Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 257. Daughter of the late Fredrick Long III and Edna Vogt she is predeceased by her in beloved husband, Albert George Jr., granddaughter, Heather Michelle Girton, her sister, Lola Harouff, brother, Ernest Vogt Jr. and “dearest friend”, Aldine Bodine. Mary is survived by, her son, Gregory, daughters and son-in-law, Vicki, Barbara Hoffman, Sandra and Jeff Girton, Grandchildren, Jennifer, Rebecca, Erik, Michael and Jeremy, Great Grandchildren, Kassandra, Sean, Rhiannon, Renee and Heather Rose, and many nieces, nephews and friends. “Another Angel has returned Home, Our memories will sustain us, Mom, rest in peace”.
